A cataract happens when the clear lens in your eye becomes cloudy. It usually doesn’t hurt, and at first, it may not affect your vision. Cataracts are most often caused by aging, but smoking, poor diet, UV exposure, and sometimes eye injuries can also play a role.
You might notice your vision is blurrier, colours look dull, or bright lights bother you more. Your glasses prescription may change more often.
The only way to treat a cataract is surgery, where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens. The operation is usually done under local anesthetic, is very safe, and most people have much clearer vision afterward.
